The core principles and practices of a therapeutic Tai Chi program designed to activate the body’s innate self-healing capabilities through the cultivation of internal energy, or “chi.” The program is based on a short form of nine movements derived from the Chen family style, which is considered by many to be the original style of Tai Chi. The curriculum is systematically structured into five distinct parts, guiding the practitioner from fundamental preparation to advanced energetic application.

The program begins with Opening the Gates, a series of warm-up exercises to loosen joints and prepare the body for energy flow. The core of the practice is found in Specific Health, where nine individual movements are taught, each targeting specific health issues by stimulating and balancing the body’s energy pathways (meridians). The third part, Stillness, deepens the practice by introducing mental focus and visualization to consciously feel and direct the flow of chi. These individual movements are then woven together into a continuous sequence in Linkage. Finally, Coil and Flow introduces the advanced principles of spiraling energy and dynamic tension, elevating the practice to a more fluid and powerful form that combines the “coiling power of the snake and the fluidity and lightness of the crane.” The overarching methodology links physical posture, deep breathing, and focused intent to achieve a wide range of health benefits, from alleviating joint pain and regulating blood pressure to strengthening immunity and combating insomnia.
